SxS Memory Card Adaptors

SxS Memory Card Adaptors

SxS Memory card adaptors (MEAD-MS01) for use as backup for Nanoflashes.

It has become a client preference to make use of the facility to record onto SxS cards as well as onto Compact Flash when using a Nanoflash. Even though the SxS card only records at 35mbs it provides a useful fallback if there were a Compact Flash card failure or other form of data loss. For the small amount of footage that would be affected in that instance, the 35mbs footage would fall within the broadcaster’s non-HD quota.

SxS cards however, are very expensive, and there is still a supply issue from Japan following the Tsunami earlier this year. Sony however make an adaptor for use in the SxS slot – the MEAD-MS01. The adaptor is the same shape as SxS memory cards so as to fit within the media slots on XDCAM EX camcorders, with no protrusions, allowing the media cover to be in place during shooting. The adaptor can accept one high speed Memory Stick Pro Duo MS Card which simply slots inside, specifically the Sony MS-HX32G (32-GB).

The cards record exactly the same as original SxS cards, using exactly the same file structure, the only difference being is that data transfer is done using a MS card reader directly from the MS card instead of from SxS card.

In order to record simultaneously , we provide 3 adaptors (with the 32gb MS Pro Duo card) for every two 64gb compact flash card. This will allow 300 minutes of recording on both formats.

The only reason that these have not replaced SxS cards completely, is due to a couple of limitations:

  •  It is not recommended to utilise the Slow Motion recording function due to speed limitations of Memory Stick media.
  • Caution should be exercised when turning off XDCAM EX hardware during recording, as the last clip may be lost.

These are not really issues when the adaptors are being used as the secondary recording source however. This data will only need to be transferred and used in the unlikely event that there is a problem with the higher bit rate footage on the compact flash card.
